Are Dogs Better Than Cats?

Are dogs better than cats? In some ways yes. Here are 6 big reasons:

1. They can be trained.
2. They are generally more affectionate.
3. They are easier on furniture.
4. There are more varieties to choose from.
5. Dogs make the best service animals.
6. Dogs can guard and protect you.

Dogs Can Be Trained

Dogs have been domesticated for much longer than cats and are used to having humans as a part of their pack.

They are pack animals (unlike cats) and respond well and yearn for an alpha dog or alpha human to provide them leadership on how to go about their daily life.

This is a huge benefit when it comes to training. All you have to do is fit yourself into that alpha role and provide the training and leadership that a dog so strongly desires.

Canine brains are just wired differently than cats when it comes to responding to commands.

Dogs Show More Affection Than Cats

I know there are plenty of affectionate cats, and some that are almost dog-like in their affection and love towards their owners.

But dogs are generally on another level when it comes to affection. This probably has a lot to do with thousands of years of dog and human pack behavior (it’s a strong part of their genetic makeup). Cats just don’t have this history.

Dogs Are Easier on Furniture

Dogs have claws but they don’t rely on them as weapons and tools that need to be stretched and sharpened on furniture (like cats). Really the only problem with dogs and furniture is the shedding of hair which can be vacuumed quite easily.

There’s a Wider Variety of Dogs to Choose From

Dogs come in such a large variety of shapes and sizes and personalities that it’s a difficult task to choose just one.

And it seems like there is a new hybrid created every week – labradoodle, aussiedoodle, chiweenie, yorkiepoo, puggle, chug, and on and on. This is not so with cats. When it comes to size variations, cats just don’t come close to the variety of dogs.

Dogs Make the Best Service Animals

What’s the 1st thing that comes to mind when you think of a service animal? A service dog.

They were the 1st and still the best. You can train them thoroughly and trust them thoroughly to be loyal and do their job. Cats? Not so much. Have you ever seen a seeing-eye cat?

Dogs Can Guard and Protect You

Whether trained or not, how much safer do you feel with a Pitbull, German Shepherd, Rottweiler or Pitbull around? A would be rapist, thief, or murderer will probably think twice about harming you when a big dog is in the picture.

A house cat is just not very intimidating unless the would-be criminal has a cat phobia.

Dogs are better than cats in so many ways, but I can think of just as many reasons that cats are better than dogs (that’s a whole different article).
